I thought it might be interesting to know a little history about the ingenious zipper. Like many inventions, it evolves over time. It's first introduction was in 1851 and was not accepted as a part of the every day costume. The magazine and fashion industry made it what it is today, but it happened nearly eighty years later. Elias Howe, inventor of the sewing machine (also a very awesome invention!) received a patent for the Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure. Forty-four years later Whitcomb Judson marketed a Clasp Locker similar to the Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure. Being the first to market the device Judson was credited as being the inventor of the zipper. A man by the name of Gideon Sundback also played a big roll in the zipper increasing the number of fastening elements from four per inch to ten or eleven. The Judson C-curity Fastener was next, then the Separable Fastener in 1917, when they were manufacturing a few hundred feet a day. Today there are many different styles, closed bottom, separating, 2-way, 2-way luggage, invisible, metal, plastic and coil. Tons of colors and sizes!
